SYMPOSIUM: Museological Framing: An Anthropological And Curatorial Turning Point In Ethnographic And Rural Museums For An Inclusive Future

Symposium 11 of CoCA2026 ‘Museological Framing: An Anthropological And Curatorial Turning Point In Ethnographic And Rural Museums For An Inclusive Future’

Resonating with the values promoted by AVICOM, Symposium 11 of CoCA2026 advocates for ethical museology and explores how digital and audiovisual storytelling, alongside intercultural collaboration, can transform museums into inclusive platforms for shared heritage and cross-cultural dialogue.

At CoCA 2026, Symposium 11 invites museum professionals, anthropologists, and cultural thinkers to rethink ethnographic and rural museums as dynamic, inclusive, and community-powered spaces.

We’re calling for papers that explore:

  • Digital storytelling and shared heritage

  • Decolonisation and restitution

  • Diasporic collaboration and co-curation

Inspired by the same principles upheld by AVICOM, the symposium promotes intercultural dialogue, innovation through digital technologies, and the ethical reinvention of museological practices.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Call for papers CoCA 2026, International Congress of Anthropology CoCA2026

Symposium 11: Museological framing: an anthropological and curatorial turning point in ethnographic and rural museums for an inclusive future

Currently, the narratives of ethnographic museums are undergoing a major reassessment. Traditionally considered static repositories of tangible culture, these institutions are at the forefront of contemporary discussions on restitution, provenance, and inclusive curation. Current global challenges, colonial legacies, or adapting to constant change, require a transition from rigid interpretations of heritage to dynamic, community-driven frameworks. As hubs of knowledge, these museums can redefine their ethical responsibilities by recognising the hidden histories of collections and promoting multi-vocal representations. This symposium is open to papers that reflect on the evolving responsibilities of ethnographic museums in addressing complexity. It aims to be a space to share alternative approaches that emphasise intellectual collaboration, cultural memory, shared stewardship, and the participation of diasporic communities, and that integrate oral histories, digital technologies, and co-created narratives to evolve as spaces of reconciliation, inclusion, and cultural justice. We seek papers that examine how ethnographic and rural museums address contemporary challenges through innovative practices in the following areas: Decolonisation and cultural restitution; Participatory and collaborative curation; Community narrative and oral history; Use of digital technologies for inclusive interpretation; Shared heritage management; Critical evaluation of collections and exhibition processes. We especially encourage the presentation of case studies, ongoing projects, multidisciplinary research, or collaborative initiatives with local and diaspora groups. Proposals focused on suggestions for museological policies, ethical management practices or frameworks for establishing networks between institutions and social entities are accepted.

Successful: The AVICOM Conference “The Virtual Museum”

Participants’ travel to the conference: more than 40.000 kilometers: AVICOM conference 2023

With around 40 participants on site and more than 90 participants who used the streaming service or joined in as speakers via Zoom, AVICOM looks back on a very successful annual conference on the topic of “Virtual Museum”.

In the venerable Parliament Hall in St Andrews, Scotland, 17 contributions and a workshop dealt with questions, requirements and possibilities for virtual museum education. The workshop in particular made it clear how necessary a definition of “virtual museum” is that is based on ICOM’s new museum definition. Because not every virtual museum presentation can be equated with a virtual museum.

The topic of “Virtual Museum” will therefore continue to occupy AVICOM: in a joint working group with the School of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews, which hosted the conference, and the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Faculty of Business Administration and Economics. The next AVICOM annual conference will also be dedicated to this topic.

Looking back on a successful conference: AVICOM board together with Dr. Kamila Oles and Dr. Alan Miller (3rd and 4th from right) from the University of St Andrews

Welcome to St Andrews, Scotland!

Cordial invitation to the F@IMP Festival and the AVICOM General Assembly / Conference 2023:

Sustainable Preservation and Promotion of Heritage: The Virtual Museum

It is now definite: The traditional international AVICOM Festival (Festival of Audiovisual and Innovative Museum Media Productions) 2023 in combination with the annual General Assembly / Conference of AVICOM  will take place from Thursday 21 September (arrival day) to Sunday 24 September (excursion and departure day) in the university town of St Andrews in Scotland.

Founded in the 15th century, St Andrews is Scotland’s first university and the third oldest in the English speaking world. Teaching began in the community of St Andrews in 1410, and the University was formally constituted by the issue of a papal bull in 1413.

At the last Faimp Festival, the University of St Andrews, School of Computer Science, had won an award with their website production “Virtual Orkney North Isles”. AVICOM is grateful that, as is tradition at the festivals, the university as a winning institution has agreed to host this year’s festival and conference.

In addition, AVICOM cordially invites you to participate in this year’s General Assembly / Conference. The theme is “The Virtual Museum”:  What are the content-related and methodological criteria for a Virtual Museum and what distinguishes it from other online museum databases? In which cases does the installation of a VM make sense? Can and may the VM replace the physical museum? Does the VM pose a threat to the physical museum or can the VM support the physical museum? Are there target groups that can be reached better via the VM than via the physical museum? What opportunities does the VM offer in terms of barrier reduction, inclusion and sustainability?

Submission of contributions is closed.

The Festival and Conference are intended as hybrid events.
